Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
