This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
