Based on fresh research, the median earner in the UK would require 52 years' worth of earnings to achieve the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.
Widening Wealth Gap Through the Years
This research analyzed net worth statistics covering the Covid pandemic period and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.
A research lead involved with the analysis commented: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."
Measuring the Economic Gap
The study revealed that the gap between the assets of the typical individual and an individual in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.
The analyst added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life affluent tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."
Relative Wealth Inequality
Despite the financial disparity growing in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the analysis.
Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK surged from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.
Contributors of Wealth Inequality
Termed "automatic" increases, via increasing property values and adjustments to pension valuations, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, according to the analysis.
These appreciations typically went to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – worsening the generational financial disparity.
Age-Based Financial Divides
The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.
Area-Based Variations
There were also stark geographic differences, with the median value of net worth in recent years amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110,000 in the NE of England.
Pandemic Period Impact
Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the data shows numerous families were able to save, growing their net worth.
Higher-income households fared much better, however. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
