The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
