A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
